Roof Repair & Maintenance Tips

1. Safety First.
It's not just for kids. Make sure you are familiar with you roofs pitch or steepness. Some roofs require special equipment. Have the proper foot wear, something with a grip. Always be sure the ladder you are using is the correct height. A harness is something to consider if you are working with multiple stories and a high pitch roof. It costs a little extra, but definitely cheaper than a trip to the ER. Never take for granted that you are a distance from the ground. if you are 6' tall it takes less than 12' to do significant damage.

2. The weather.
The weather is an obvious thing to consider when you are planning any work to your roof, but be sure to get specific. Plan the weather down to the hour and allow for incidentals. Take into consideration wind speed in your planning especially if you are going beyond 1 story.

3. Find a Possible Leak.
If you are worried about a possible leak and have enough hose length, spray the roof in the suspected area. You can use plastic sheeting or roofing paper also known as roofing felt to protect the roof once the leak is detected until you can repair it or call a roofer.

4. All about Maintenance.
Once the weather is suitable in your area, once a year there are things you can do to prevent unnecessary costs. Clean all ventilation systems, seal around vents and pipes, paint exposed metals to prevent rust, and of course clean those gutters!
Remember we offer great repair rates and maintenance packages!

The Language of a Roof: Understanding the most important element of your home!

Many times when people call on us for either a full roof or roof repair they are at a loss for words when trying to describe what they want simply because they don't know some basic terminology! Whether you need a simple repair or have a large project in mind this article should assist you in communicating with your contractor and or supplier.

There are several things to consider when it comes to roof renovation. Pitch is particularly important and is useful information for the contractor to have. Pitch is the steepness of your roof. 1/12 (flat roof)- 12/12

Knowing the square of your roof is also important. 1 square equals 100 square feet. For example if your roof is 2000 square feet it is 20 square. Pitch will also play a factor when calculating the square footage of a roof. The square footage of a home is not an exact reflection of the square footage of a roof. Many websites and apps will do the calculation for you if you know the pitch and square footage.

Roof Sheathing is your decking, OSB. It is laid over the rafters and essentially is the first layer of your roof. There are times upon inspection when your installer will find that portions of your decking need torn out and replaced. This will result in a slightly higher end bill, but is imperative if any rotted wood is found.

Roof Felt and ice and water shield is the next layer. It is installed over your decking and must never be left out!

Lastly, there are many materials besides asphalt that can be installed in your roofing system. This final layer is where you ensure the life of your roof and personalize the look of a home.
