Equipment for a High Pitch Roof: Installing Jacks and Boards

Many times people do not understand the variables that play into why some roofs seem to be installed instantaneously and others seem to take forever. I am going to touch on just one of those variables here and that is roof pitch or steepness and the equipment needed for high pitch roofs.

Typical residential roofs range from 1/12(flat)-12/12(very steep).
A roof pitch ranging from 1/12-5/12 is going to be easy to walk on and make progress almost as quick as if the crew was on level ground.

A roof ranging in pitch from 6/12-8/12 may still be walkable, but much harder to maneuver and will cause progress to be slower. Some roofs in this range require special equipment installed on the roof in order to access it with greater ease.

A roof from 9/12 and up is often referred to as a jacker because they always require special equipment.

Equipment that is often used is jacks and boards.
This variable alone will cause a job to take twice as long as a roof of lower pitch.
Below is a video of jacks and boards being installed.

Toledo Roofing Project; Pricing.

Materials:
Hunt's Roofing and Siding does not provide material. However, We will provide an estimated cost based on the experience of working with many local suppliers.

Upon customer request we can also fully assist with the material ordering process.
We handle things this way in order to provide complete transparency. If a customer does request assistance with materials it is done in a way that allows the customers to see where every dollar is going.
For example, regardless of who you choose to install your roof your material should not cost anymore than $110.00-$120.00 per square or $1.10-$1.20 per square foot.
The roof featured measured out to be 2,400 square feet or 24 square(please keep in mind that roof square footage can differ greatly from living space square footage based on many variables).

Materials run a property like this right around $3,000.00. Anything more than a few hundred dollars more or less should be questioned.

Installation:
Each Installation estimate and invoice are itemized and explained. The bulk of the installation charges are broken down so that customers are able to see exactly which installation task costs what. This is a tremendous help when it comes to cost comparing a roof job of this size.

Through Hunt's Roofing and Siding installment of this size and variables (mainly the pitch or steepness which is high. This factor will cause installment costs to increase primarily due to the amount of labor, time, equipment, and risk increases that come along with a higher pitch roof.)
Installment costs would be in the $3,500.00 range.

Project Total including materials and installation: $6,500.00

The Language of a Roof: Understanding the most important element of your home!

Many times when people call on us for either a full roof or roof repair they are at a loss for words when trying to describe what they want simply because they don't know some basic terminology! Whether you need a simple repair or have a large project in mind this article should assist you in communicating with your contractor and or supplier.

There are several things to consider when it comes to roof renovation. Pitch is particularly important and is useful information for the contractor to have. Pitch is the steepness of your roof. 1/12 (flat roof)- 12/12

Knowing the square of your roof is also important. 1 square equals 100 square feet. For example if your roof is 2000 square feet it is 20 square. Pitch will also play a factor when calculating the square footage of a roof. The square footage of a home is not an exact reflection of the square footage of a roof. Many websites and apps will do the calculation for you if you know the pitch and square footage.

Roof Sheathing is your decking, OSB. It is laid over the rafters and essentially is the first layer of your roof. There are times upon inspection when your installer will find that portions of your decking need torn out and replaced. This will result in a slightly higher end bill, but is imperative if any rotted wood is found.

Roof Felt and ice and water shield is the next layer. It is installed over your decking and must never be left out!

Lastly, there are many materials besides asphalt that can be installed in your roofing system. This final layer is where you ensure the life of your roof and personalize the look of a home.
